Practice Summary.

Dr. Celander has over fifteen years of experience as a practicing patent attorney and over twenty-five years of experience in the patent field as an inventor. His inventive activities began when he was a biophysics graduate student at Harvard University. Dr. Celander's personal academic mentor in graduate school was Professor William A. Haseltine, who founded several notable biotechnology companies, including Human Genome Sciences Inc. After completing his Ph.D. work at Harvard, Dr. Celander studied as a postdoctoral associate with Professor Thomas R. Cech of the University of Colorado, who won the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

 

Following his twelve year career in academic research and teaching at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Loyola University of Chicago, Dr. Celander became a patent attorney. Dr. Celander combines his legal knowledge and advanced academic training to assist inventors in universities and corporations with their patent prosecution and opinion work.

 

Dr. Celander has prosecuted hundreds of patent cases in a myriad of technologies. Representative art areas of Dr. Celander's demonstrated prosecution experience include biochemistry, biopolymers, biotechnology, business methods, cell biology & therapeutics, chemistry, consumer electronics, drug delivery systems, foods & edible products, fuel cell technologies, green technologies, herbal products and processes, kitchen products, medical diagnostics, molecular medicine, nanotechnology, nucleic acid technologies, pharmaceutics, polymer chemistry, proteomics, semiconductors, software & internet technologies, stem cells & regenerative medicine therapeutics, and washing & drying technologies.

 

Dr. Celander has extensive experience in the pharmaceutical and molecular medicine arenas by providing opinion work regarding Hatch-Waxman certifications, compounds, formulations, pharmaceutical processes, medical devices, and regenerative medicine therapeutics. He has participated in scores of due diligence assignments pertaining to in-licensing agreements as well as mergers and acquisitions.

 

Dr. Celander also performs trademark opinion and prosecution work for corporate and university clients. Dr. Celander’s trademark practice focuses on trademark searches, clearance and infringement opinion work, registrations, oppositions, maintenance and protection. Dr. Celander also counsels clients on best practices in the trademark arena, including brand development, opposition proceedings, unfair competition and enforcement strategies.

 

Prior to joining Klintworth and Rozenblat IP, Dr. Celander was with the law firms of Dentons and Loeb & Loeb.
